 Save Fort Morgan Pier Project

The Fort Morgan Pier, Gulf Shores, Alabama is set to close indefinitely after the Fort Morgan Reenactment on July 31, 2014. We will lose yet another great fishing spot. Fishing space is limited, as it is, along the coast and public access just keeps shrinking.

With the Pier located at the mouth of Mobile Bay, there have been millions of flounder, mullet, sheephead and other fish caught off this pier! With the pier facing west, it has some of the most gorgeous sunsets, in the world and is a place of great memories for so many people, not just Alabamians. There have been many generations of memories made on this pier; grandparents took their grandchildren fishing here and now those grandchildren are taking their grandchildren fishing.

Since posting the impending closure on the It Happens in Alabama Facebook page, we have had over 10,000 responses in the last two days of people expressing their disappointment, sharing their memories and offering to donate and help save the pier.

In response to our following, we feel an obligation to do everything in our power to renovate, preserve and get this pier re-opened as quickly as possible, for our fellow Alabamians.

This property is not for sale, it belongs to the People of Alabama. It is under the care of the Alabama Historical Commission. The reason we need to raise money is this, some of the pylings have rotted and need replacing, as well as decking, and railing needs to be added. The Alabama Historical Commission does not have the funds for the repairs. So they have chosen to just close it down.

Stephen McNair, State Director of Historic Sites, Alabama Historical Commission has assured me that as quickly as we raise funds and the repairs made, the pier will be reopened! He has also committed to working closely with us. We are very happy to have Gettin’ Outdoors Radio with Big Daddy Lawler on the team, as well. As the word gets out, we expect to see this list grow quickly.

Our overall goal is to renovate this pier and make many added improvement. But the first step is to make it safe and get it re-opened as quickly as possible. Money will be invested in several waves and you will be made aware of all progress.

No donation is too small and are tax deductible. ALL donors’ names will appear on a plaque to be placed at the Pier on re-opening day. (We will let you know the cut-off date for that as time nears). 93% of ever dollar will be used for the pier project. (5% commission to GoFundMe + 3% processing fees to GoFundMe = 8%)

Remember, this is THE PEOPLE’S pier and it will take the People to SAVE it. We, and the People of the Great State of Alabama, thank you, in advance, for your donation.
